Q&A with Ginger N Tonic

What do you get up to when you’re not playing derby?

I’m the mom of a ten-year-old and a thirteen-year-old. They keep me on my toes, along with our two dogs.🙂 I like to bake and try out new recipes, and I enjoy gardening. I’m really getting into native plants and pollinator gardens. I also like to look for beach glass and have started kayaking.

What are you working towards in derby right now?

Since we have been in the pandemic this past year, I just want to be in good enough shape to not be embarrassed or get hurt when we get back to practicing.

Any big successes or milestones for you in derby recently?

This year is my 8th year in derby.

How has off-skate training contributed to your derby experience?

I’ll be honest: I haven’t been the best at off-skates training in the past. I found it very difficult to be motivated and stick with anything. That is, until Roller Derby Athletics! 😉

What is your favorite thing about training with RDA?

Oh goodness, there is so much to love. I love the app, and that you can watch examples of all the exercises. I love the fact that it takes the guesswork out of what to do, and that the workouts build upon themselves. But my most favorite thing is the variations offered on exercises to meet you where your skill level is. It’s easy to be intimated by really tough exercises, but the variations make them achievable. I also like the flexibility of the program, as it allows you to move workouts to fit your schedule. That way, if life gets in the way, it’s easy to stay on track rather than get discouraged and just stop.

Do you have a favorite RDA workout?

I don’t really have a favorite workout, but the Abs challenge this month has been great. It’s a small milestone for me, but for the first time this month, I could actually feel the isolation of my abs when doing Penguins!

Anything else you want to tell the world about your derby or training experience this year?

I just want to shout out Coach Maloik, she is great at keeping us motivated. RDA and Coach Maloik have made it easy and fun to stick with off-skates training. They really work hard to makes the exercises and workouts work no matter what level you are at.
