Bulletproof Coffee – Can your Kitchen Handle It?

Posted on: November 9th 2014

Hi All-Stars!

In our ongoing Derby in the Kitchen series on healthy fats, Lilith NoFair introduced us to this bizzarro “bulletproof coffee” fad out there for ditching the cream and sugar in favour of adding BUTTER to your morning joe instead.

As your humble servant, I have subjected myself to human experiments in order to test out this concept on your behalf! Lucky me!

This might be one of my favourite videos I’ve ever made, because it turns into a complete comedy of errors – almost entirely NOT the fault of the recipe, but rather a symptom of me trying to actually do this, in the morning, BEFORE DRINKING ANY COFFEE. You’ll have to watch to see the wheels come off my bus, and to find out how it actually tastes!  Surprises abound…

Here’s the official ingredient list, from The Bulletproof Exec website:

  • At least 2tbs Kerrygold unsalted grass-fed butter (I like up to 6 tbps, or 80g or 88 ml).
  • 1-2tbs of MCT oil (15-30 ml)  (note: Booty Quake substituted high-quality coconut oil)
  • 2 cups (~453g or 500ml) of hot coffee brewed with low-toxin beans (like Bulletproof Upgraded Coffee) using a paper filter (Hario V60 pourover is my favorite brewing method, and it’s only $10). (note: Booty Quake used her standard beans in a French Press – any old method would do for brewing the coffee).

So, now that you’ve seen the video, and you’re able to learn from my mistakes… are you going to try this??  What do you think – too weird? Too scary to think about ingesting all that fat in one sitting?  Shoot me a note in the comments – NoFair and I would love to hear from you!

xoxo Booty Quake
