Because we know you All-Stars have lots of great tricks up your sleeves, this week Lilith NoFair and I took the week off and let YOU do all the work :)
We’re happy to present the winners of our recipe contest! Blue Raven and BadBrand sent in some great recipes – one sweet and one savoury, for your pre- and post-workout fueling needs.
Without further ado, your winners!
No-Bake Energy Bites
This one is our Grand Prize Winner, coming to you from Ally, aka Blue Raven! Blue Raven makes these on the regular, and brings them with her to games and workouts to re-fuel with. It doesn’t hurt that her five-year-old loves them too!
- 1 Cup dry oatmeal
- ½ cup chocolate chips (dark chocolate preferred!)
- ½ cup peanut butter
- ½ cup ground flaxseed
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1 tsp. vanilla
Combine all, and refrigerate for 30 minutes to make rolling easier (or use wet hands right away). Roll into 1” balls and store in the fridge in an airtight container! Using dark chocolate reduces the sugar content while keeping the chocolate taste.
This recipe has been found almost verbatim on a couple of different sites including Food.com and Allrecipes.com so we can’t provide exact attribution, but we love Blue Raven for contributing it, and taking a photo of her results! For her efforts, she’s getting a Roller Derby Athletics prize pack and a free training program of her choice. Plus we’ll be featuring this recipe on the RDA Facebook page real soon too :)

Jammer Fuel
Sheena’s (aka Badbrand’s) favourite pre-game recipe has become almost a superstition for her. So hearty and carb-worthy, she and her teammate have named it Jammer Fuel!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup quinoa – cooked and cooled
- 1 can black beans (or chickpeas) – drained and rinsed
- Crumbled feta
- Chopped tomatoes and cucumbers
Dressing:
- 1/4 cup vinegar (balsamic or flavoured white vinegars or apple cider vinegar)
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 1 tsp honey
- Spices – I use a couple tablespoons of a Southwest seasoning but a cumin mixture works too
Mix everything together and let the power fuel you!
Sheena tells us she changes this recipe up according to what is in the cupboard and the fridge on any given day – but the basic formula stays the same! I did a little searching around on the internet myself and similar concoctions recommend adding lime juice, which would definitely add some yum, and go well with the southwestern / cumin spices!
Sheena’s getting a Roller Derby Athletics training program of her choice for her winning contribution :)
Thanks to all our contributors for sending us your recipe ideas! You’re the best – and NoFair and I really appreciate the week to put our feet up and watch you write the blog for us…
