Let’s be honest: hearing the words “cardio AND strength training” make us want to run for the hills, and not just for the exercise. But, when looking at the combined health benefits to both kinds of training, we figure it’s at least worth a try.
Benefits of Doing Cardio:
Lower risk for serious health conditions, such as high blood pressure, cancer, heart disease, and metabolic syndrome, according to the American Journal of Cardiology.
If you already have chronic health conditions, cardio is still for you! Cardio can help you manage conditions such as coronary artery disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Cardio is a well-known mood booster (we know, we know – it’s hard to believe!). Aerobic activity is a great tool for managing mild to moderate depression. Serotonin, where have you been, girl?
Cardio helps to build a stronger heart – the word “cardio” itself means “pertaining to the heart.”Cardio builds strong muscles while reducing the effects of aging, including memory and cognitive function.
Benefits of Strength Training:
Strength training has been proven to slow bone loss and even build bone, reducing the risk of osteoporosis, according to Harvard Health. More muscle means a higher metabolism. Say less, we get it. Chronic health conditions and their symptoms can be managed through strength training, such as arthritis, back pain, diabetes, and depression.
