We have loads of dedicated athletes training with Roller Derby Athletics all the time. But every now and again, someone comes along and knocks our skates off with their dedication and determination. And we can’t help sharing our #rdaallstars success with the world!
Introducing: Tyranna Soreass, proud member of Suburbia Roller Derby! Photo used with permission from David Dyte.
Coach Maloik nominated Soreass, she is a dedicated member of our MVP Training since November 2018 and has completed over 180 workouts with us. Her determination and consistency with workouts sets a great example. Thank you and Congratulations, Soreass!!
Q&A with Tyranna Soreasss
What do you get up to when you’re not playing derby?
When I am not playing derby I am usually still finding ways to skate, which usually means street and path skating, but right now because I am in the frigid north I am learning how to ice skate. I also have just taken up aerial fabric, which I am terrible at, but it’s still fun and challenging. I also really like hiking and hanging out with my two cats and a dog. In my normal life, I’m a youth services librarian, which I absolutely love, and that takes up most of my brain space outside of derby.
What are you working towards in derby right now?
Right now I am just finding ways to get back and maintain all of my derby skills that I have let fall by the wayside while derby is on pause, and keeping up with cross-training so I will be ready to come back when the time comes.
Any big successes or milestones for you in derby recently?
Right before derby went on pause I had just moved from an A/B swing skater to the A team with Suburbia Roller Derby, so that was really really exciting for me, even if the season was cut short. Just making the A team has given me the confidence I need to know that when I come back, I can ultimately get back to that level again.
How has off-skate training contributed to your derby experience?
It has helped immensely. Once I started doing RDA I felt myself getting so much stronger, both physically and mentally. I found that I had more endurance and strength and it made me such a more well-rounded athlete.
What is your favorite thing about training with RDA?
The accountability and training programs. I love that there are others on the app, as well as my Coach that checks in and makes personal workout plans for me depending on what I am currently focused on. I also loooooove the challenges that they do every so often. I do them with my derby wife, and they are so fun. I’m super competitive, so I need to finish a challenge 100%, even if it means finishing a little later than others.
Do you have a favorite RDA workout?
I don’t have a favorite workout sequence, but anything with penguins in it delights me to no end. I adore penguins, and even if the rest of the workout is tough, knowing that penguins are in it can get me through the hard parts.
Anything else you want to tell the world about your derby or training experience this year?
Yes! Even though it is a pandemic, having RDA has been the most helpful in keeping my training up, and has been AMAZING for my mental health. Honestly, I just want derby back and I can’t wait to get on the track again.
