Just keep chipping away, Gram! Practice creates muscle memory, and eventually it starts to cross over into scrimmaging and games. 1%!

Most excellent advice. I'm Bambi in skates, haven't skated since I was 11 and wasn't good at all. So never kept at it. My girlfriends and I always loved Derby but feared I couldn't skate. We went to the tryouts and they said they can teach me.... My first day of practice I cried....I thought it was beginning class but everyone around could skate. I was overwhelmed by the Derby Girls were so supportive.... So I kept trying. Now I skate 4-5 a week to practice and on week 4 of training. And my Derby sisters have seen my progress and determination. I don't really have one skill down confidentiality but still applying my 1 percent always. Thank you!!!!

Thank you so much for this article. Sometimes when I look at where I am vs. where I would like to be, it seems like an insurmountable challenge. Looking at it in the way you describe in your article makes it seem much more achievable and not so overwhelming. Sometimes I think I just need to take a step back, take a deep breath and begin. Every journey begins with a single step!

This is one of the best things I've ever read. This isn't even just about derby. This applies to everything in life. You get what you give. I turned 33 last year, and entered my seventh derby season (in ten years; I took two years off while I was a student in the Navy, and then one season off for deployment). As a younger skater, I had the WORST attitude. I wasn't rude or nasty, but I KNEW there were things I'd never be able to do. I'd pretty much given up before I'd even tried. Everything changed for me when I did my first crossover. That was a huge milestone for me.

2015 was my best season ever. I never told myself I couldn't do it. I tried everything at least twice. I voluntarily became a jammer. One of the great things about game photographers is that they pretty much capture everyone, and you often forget that they're there. I look at pictures of me in games last season and compare them to me in 2006. It's a HUGE difference. I am a totally different skater with a totally different attitude and a totally different perspective of life. I am SO grateful for roller derby and everything that it's taught me. It's given me so much confidence (and a little bit of patience) and I've made friends that I'll have forever. I could sit here and rewrite your article in my own words because there's nothing you've said here that I don't agree with, and I preach this to my teammates every chance I get. Thank you, for articulating this expression so well. I'm also a math nerd, so you immediately struck a nerve with me. This is fantastic.

Thank you, I really like this great advice.
I will show up and "treat each practise like a game" as Kim Janna said, and give 100%!
