TOTALLY!! That's a great effort for your first time out! Practice will help, and some off-skates cardio work and strength - think high reps/low rest :) You've got this!

First time doing crossovers around the track and got 23.5 laps. Is this a good benchmark for being one month as a freshie? My only physical limitation was breathing became almost impossible toward the end and I lost a lot of momentum. I'll work on breathing rhythm and stride next time!

Hey Flame Dame - sounds super frustrating! But also sounds like something you can overcome with some mental skills training. Check out our confidence challenge, starting in just a couple weeks (March 5) - https://rollerderbyathletics.com/confidence-challenge-2018/

I'm finding I have no problem doing 27 laps in 5 minutes when I'm NOT being tested, but once it's test day I'm stuck at 26 or 26.5. My left leg also cramps up around lap 10-12, and I've stretched and drank tons of water.

I did 22, 23, 24 and now 25 (10 weeks since I started). These tips are very helpful, thank you. My left skate sticks to the ground on my crossovers and I know I must lift it in order to succeed. This is my personal mental challenge, because I honestly think it's my "newbie comfort zone" way of doing crossovers. I consciously have to lift that left foot up and everyone yells "PICK UP THAT FOOT!" as I roll. : )

Can you explain this to me? Like specifically as clear as an ingredients list or instruction manual of exactly what I should skate to build endurance with this? I found it hard to understand - being completely new to it.

In reply to <a href="https://rollerderbyathletics.com/27-laps-test/#comment-126871">Adrienne Michalek</a>.

Hi Adrienne!I *believe* it's expected that WFTDA charter roster skaters are expected to pass the skills annually (but don't quote me on that). It's up to the league to decide whether MSRs are required for non-charter skaters, and if so, how often re-testing happens. I don't necessarily think that it's the best possible test of either endurance or speed for the purpose of roller derby, but it does demonstrate endurance! It's really a league decision to see if, at the general level of play common in your league, a skater who is not fast enough or fit enough to succeed at the test is still safe to participate in scrimmaging and bouting with their fellow teammates.

Do leagues test the 27n5 yearly? WFTDA does not state how often this test needs to be done, just that it is passed. We test yearly. Some skaters (the ones that have trouble) have brought it to our attention that it is up to the league how often to test. They don't feel it is a good measure of endurance, but rather speed and thinks it holds some good derby players back from playing. I would like to know what other leagues do. Thanks.
